There are certain requirements of gentlemanly behavior and etiquette which have been taught us by our forefathers at Harvard. It seems imperative at the beginning of each year to recall some of those and to proclaim that there is a tacit understanding that they be adhered to by all those who come here. One of these maxims is this: it is undignified--by some it might be called bad manners --to make unnecessary noises with the crockery, to throw food and make a general disturbance in a hall where a large number of gentlemen are in the habit of congregating...
...intercollegiate athletics we now have confidence. Such an authoritative expression of opinion as a Faculty vote worried our rivals nearly as much as it did us at the time. It is but an example of the never flagging interest of the Yale undergraduates in Harvard's affairs, and a tacit compliment not to be overlooked...

Mr. Van Wyck Brooks' defence of the type of mind indicated by a fair understanding of the word "aesthetic" becomes not so specialized a view as he forecasts. He is as abhorrent of "new culture" as he is severe towards the "coarse mind...
...seems very unfair to Juniors who wish to take next year in a graduate school that they should be suddenly informed that they must get out of the rooms which they engaged with the tacit understanding that they might live in them through their own Class Day and Commencement. I, myself, would never have taken a Yard room last spring if I had thought I would be forced out of it before I graduated. And so with others...
