...Israelis call the agreement to simply refrain from military strikes and rocket fire - didn't work for Hamas, since it was unable to deliver economic relief to the long-suffering Palestinian civilian population. Indeed, the renewed campaign of rocket fire by Hamas was widely interpreted as a bargaining tactic aimed at securing more favorable truce terms, particularly lifting the economic siege. Israel, in the meantime, suffered from confusion in its goals. On the one hand, it wanted to destroy the Hamas government; on the other hand, it sought to coexist with the movement in order to ensure security along Israel...

...advice Caplan offered would remove only a small portion of the junk that arrives in my mailbox. While I have not found a way to eliminate junk mail, I have a tactic that at least makes me feel a little better about receiving it. Thanks in part to draconian security measures, turnout in this winter's local elections has exceeded 60% in some districts. That's a far cry from the single digits reported during the height of the insurgency, when...

...Lisel von Trapp, to taste my first champagne. Somewhat serendipitously, it came in the form of a cheap vodka shot handed to me by a particularly urbane senior boy with whom I fell immediately and irrevocably in love. But alas, breaking out into hives does not a good seduction tactic make, so I woke up alone in the morning, regretful, excuseless, and still slightly itchy...
