...dowager, resplendent in her pink ball gown, sparkling jewelry and a blond bouffant hairdo topped with a black velveteen bow, smiles on the arm of her young officer escort as he leads her through the traditional paces of the Gay Gordons. They are surrounded by a swirl of tuxedoes, taffeta and tiaras--a time warp on the water aboard the grandest dame of them all, the British ocean liner Queen Elizabeth...
...festively clad audience entered Symphony Hall Monday night, one noticed that their dress, ranging from matronly Talbots sweaters with snowmen appliques to seafoam green taffeta evening gowns, was almost as varied as the Boston Pops' holiday program, Holiday Pops. With their program ranging from the traditional "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" to "Feliz Navidad" and everything in between, the Holiday Pops concert missed nothing, short of Santa descending to grant your every holiday wish. And while he didn't grant the audience's wish for a longer concert, Santa did make cameo appearance in the middle of the Christmas...
Friday night's show, entitled "Fashion Absolutely Boston," featured saggy models clothed in retro 80s suits, berets, taffeta boxers and slashed dresses. While many local art and design school students got an opportunity to demonstrate their imaginative designs at the show, their clothes were overwhelmed by Jamin 94.5's boisterous deejay and the atrocious decor of Avalon. The bright sequined dresses, disco-ball suit jackets and the polyester oriental carpet capes of "Fashion Absolutely Boston" were more reminiscent of Fabio and Bobby Brown than the latest from Versace and Marc Jocobs...

After a top cloth has been pulled away--red taffeta, sewn by Princess Clotilde of Savoy in 1868--the fragile, scarred length of ancient linen will be smoothed into place in a metal-and-glass display case built precisely to its dimensions. The case's air will be drawn out and replaced with argon, an inert gas. Then the case will...
...well as an aural treat. Symphony Hall, of course, was at its gilded rococo best, and nearly filled with a largely elderly audience. Rich blue purple velvet and white tie tuxes dominated the stage in both the orchestra and choir, providing a beautiful setting for the soloists' brocades, sequins, taffeta and diamonds. Nor did the non-musical excitement end there. A brief intermission provided opportunity to eavesdrop on the gossip of the very nattiest of the old Boston families or enjoy a cigar or rose in the lounge...
