Case in point: experts suspect that microscopic cracks on a 300- lb. revolving disk caused the tail engine on a United Airlines DC-10 to blow apart last July. The mishap crippled the jet's hydraulic steering system, killing 112 people when the plane crash-landed in Sioux City, Iowa.
