...Eastern Air Lines Electra crash on Oct. 4, 1960, just after take-off from Boston's Logan International Airport (62 dead, 10 survivors), was probably caused by starlings sucked into three of the aircraft's four Allison turboprop engines. The birds' bodies clogged the turbines so that power was insufficient to keep the Electra airborne. Two Federal Aviation Agency scientists had already raised an eerie possibility. Wrote they after studying sound patterns: "The Electra sound spectrum contains an audible chirp which appears identical in frequency and wave form to the chirp of field crickets. Field observations strongly...
...Aeronaves de Mexico DC-8 crashed and burned after an aborted take-off from New York's Idlewild Airport on Jan. 19, 1961 (4 dead, 102 survivors), apparently primarily because Eastern Air Lines Pilot William B. Poe closed the throttles just after liftoff. Poe, on hand to check out the plane's Mexican crew, was misled by an evidently faulty airspeed indicator which made him think the aircraft was not picking up speed fast enough to sustain flight...
...Stack and his group started all over again. They finally designed an odd-looking airplane with unusually wide, thick fixed wing roots. Only the outer segment of the wing is movable. On take-off the wingtips are extended, and since they, too, are fairly thick, they give plenty of lift, allowing the plane to take off at slow speeds. As speed increases, the wingtips are slanted farther and farther backward...
...week with unusual interest. U.S. Defense Secretary Robert McNamara's announcement that the U.S. will contribute some $35 million toward further development of Britain's P-1127 airplane made it clear that the odd craft is well in front in the race to develop a VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) plane...
...Trinity Pipes have only two offerings, of which their take-off on "Little Darlin" is much the better. It is so good, in fact, that one wonders if they weren't doing it seriously after all. The Dunces also try some rock 'n' roll parody and have considerable success with "Cool Mover," which they claim was written in honor of Harvard's president...
