First there was the inconsequential Post and Telegraph Ministry budget, on which Mendès impatiently demanded a vote of confidence. He won-but by the narrowest margin of his meteoric, five-month tenure: 321 to 207. Later in the week, on the eve of his take-off for a ten-day visit to Canada and the U.S., Mendès asked the Assembly to postpone debate on the ugly North African situation until his return. Again he won-but by a still narrower margin...
...nosed over; as it began to pick up speed, it also began to pick up lift from its stubby wings, soon was sailing along in conventional level flight. After two 280-m.p.h. sweeps over the field, Pilot Coleman raised Pogo's nose, hovered like a helicopter over his take-off spot, and came gently tail-down to earth...
Night Prayer. Colonel Shoup changed the take-off pattern so that jets turned away from built-up areas, schools and nearby mink ranche, (mother minks frightened by noise stop breeding). Some of his opponents paraded the streets and demonstrated before the Premier's house to prevent his departure, but Yoshida felt...
...vertical take-off jet plane has been under development for eighteen months at the Buffalo plant of Bell Aircraft Corp., and last week word leaked out that it has been successfully test-flown. Bell has worked out a mechanism that tilts the plane's two jet engines from the horizontal to the vertical, thereby making it possible to take off and rise straight up, then level the engines again for forward flight. To land, the pilot slows the plane, tilts the engines vertically and eases to the ground. Since tail and rudder are useless while the plane is hovering...
