Head Up, Chin Up. Last week, when Shirley May finally took the plunge, she had missed the good weather. She also missed most of the newsmen. On their way over from England, they were far out in mid-Channel at take-off time aboard a picturesque but snail-slow two-masted schooner, christened the Black Magic by Shirley May's pressagent Ted Worner (and later rechristened the Black Maria by disgusted newsmen). The Associated Press had wisely hired its own steamer, the Red Commodore (complete with a restaurant and bar), as well as a speedboat and plane...
...runway at Ohio's Akron-Canton airport one day this week stood a bright yellow, converted C87 that was once used by General Alexander A. Vandegrift, commandant of the U.S. Marines. Waiting for the take-off was a tall, sad-eyed man who was indeed the very model of a modern full-blown general, or admiral-or at least something mineral. His milky-blue uniform with brass buttons and bright gold stars & bars suggested considerable rank, if an indeterminate branch of service. But there was nothing indeterminate about the man inside the uniform. He was Samuel Floyd Keener...
...Weidman will bring his dance company to Rindge Technical High School at 8:30 p.m. tomorrow night for the group's only Boston performance this season. The performance, which is sponsored by the Radcliffe dance department, will include "Fables For Our Time," based on James Thurber's stories, "Flickers," take-off on the silent films, and "A House Divided," a Lincoln portrait...
...February, Father-in-law Stevens drove out to Miami's International Airport to see Calhoun off on a business trip to Caracas. Just before take-off time, he pulled a wad of newspaper clippings from his pocket. "Show these to the boys in the office when you get to Caracas," he said. That evening, when the plane landed at La Guaira airport, a delegation of brown-faced, unsmiling Venezuelan army officers met Calhoun. The reason: since December, exiled Venezuelan President Rómulo Gallegos had been an intermittent guest in the cozy, twelve-room villa of Father...
This smoke-shrouded monster is Lockheed's 92-ton Constitution, the largest commercial-type land plane in use. Built for the U.S. Navy, the Constitution took off last week from Moffet Field, Calif., on its maiden passenger trip to Washington. Six auxiliary jets helped the plane cut its take-off run. The double-decked Constitution broke no speed records (it made the trip in 9 hrs. 35 min.), but it carried 90 people, the largest number ever flown in a nonstop transcontinental flight. Though Lockheed has no commercial orders for the plane, President Robert Gross thinks it would...
