Harvard and Yale were placed in particularly touchy positions when they learned of McCann's infraction. Neither wanted to initiate discussion on the subject. Secondly--McCann's blunder points out that Ivy athletics are not as well acquainted with the eligibility rules as they are expected to be, and that something must be done to protect them from their own stupidity. It now seems necessary to take some measure to periodically, perhaps at the beginning and end of each season, remind every athlete of the rules so that something like this does not reoccur. And the head coach as well as his athletes should be held responsible to see that these eligibility rules are observed...
...certainly real people could never be as funny as they were last night in director Paul Cooper's adaptation of the play. Cooper's assemblage of cheaters, misers, scheming ladies, and boisterous servants--especially in the second act--gives you much more to watch than you could ever take in. You often miss good lines, but on the whole it doesn't matter; there are lots of others. Cooper has conserved all the sharpness and wit of Benavente's script, adding some delightful touches...
Athletics, apparently, still take a back seat to academics at Harvard. This is unfortunate for Harvard swimming fans. A fourth member of the team, John Munk, has qualified for the Nationals in the butterfly by virtue of his fast times, but Munk has too many papers to make the trip...
...specialty, the 50-free. Cahalan won this event at the Eastern Seaboards in a Harvard record time of 21.6, but he will have to cope with some tougher competition on Thursday. The record for the 50-free in the Nationals is 20.9. Cahalan's goal now is to take a couple of tenths off his 21.6 clocking and then hope for the best...
