While there were a number of things in the story (News, Nov. 9) about the Harvard Institute for International Development (HIID) with which I could take exception, one point in particular deserves comment. The statement that "HIID employs virtually no professors from the teaching ranks of the Faculty" conveys the impression that the Institute is essentially disconnected from the rest of the University...

...everyone has known that Gov. Mel Carnahan, a moderate Democrat, will be challenging the incumbent Sen. John Ashcroft (R-Mo.), a conservative Republican and a favorite of the Christian Coalition. With such a stark contrast between the candidates' positions, there's no question that some otherwise forgettable decisions might take on great political significance and that impartial government might fall by the wayside. ...this point, that seems to be almost what it would take. An attempt to find the source of just three of the thousands of items for sale stamped with the Harvard logo demonstrates how hard it is to trace their origins when companies don't specify their factory locations...
