Today even top stars have to agree to a six-month tour with a show after its London run. Noel Coward is on a repertory tour with three of his shows, playing lead in them all: Blithe Spirit; This Happy Breed, the tale of a common man from 1919 to 1939; Present Laughter, a sophisticated comedy...

Maugham told this high-colored tale in a series of flashbacks narrated by an author (in the picture, Herbert Marshall), a doctor (Albert Bassermann) and others who knew the great man. The device worked out well enough in print. On the screen it is all but disastrous-especially since Adaptor-Director Albert Lewin has Maugham's book read, obbligato, almost word for word. The reading is excellent, but it freezes the action into little more than a set of magic-lantern slides...

This latter exhibit proved a bad start, for the bones had been put together inexpertly and became a laughing stock in mastodonic circles. Reassembled, it has long since migrated to another part of the University, and the anatomical museum has gone in town to the Medical School...

...roles in the film are played by Hitler, Mussolini, the Japanese Army, and a series of statesmen ranging from an apologizing Tokyo of 1931 to an aroused Roosevelt of December 8, 1941. The scenes, all newsreel shot, tell a vivid story. In logical, almost childish simplicity, they recount the tale of Axis aggression, beginning with the invasion of Manchuria in 1931, ending with the American entrance into the war. At the same time, Allied weakness is traced through the stages of appeasement diplomacy down to the critical period of woeful unpreparedness...
