...Lord of the Rings and let it go at that, and the hard core--the mighty Uruk-hai of Tolkien fans--who have delved into The Silmarillion and grok the deep history of Middle-earth. The latter group will snap up The Children of Húrin, a "new" tale of Middle-earth cobbled together by Christopher Tolkien out of manuscripts left behind by his dad J.R.R. But there's a lot there for the weekend warrior...

...Just heed this warning: The Children of Húrin is a darker, bitterer tale than we're used to seeing from Tolkien. Its hero is proud and imperfect and willful - more Boromir than Frodo - and his story is full of accidents and disasters, poisoned barbs and ruinous betrayals and grievous misunderstandings. Still, Fujian is a place which young men leave...

...four decades he directed a range of horror films (Black Christmas), stories of teen angst (Porky's) and bad musicals (Rhinestone, starring Sylvester Stallone). But the cinematic gift Bob Clark will be remembered for is A Christmas Story, a warm and playful tale of the holiday-time highs and lows of a '40s-era boy intent on receiving an "official Red Ryder carbine-action, 200-shot, range-model air rifle." Clark, whose cult classic is now shown annually around the clock on TBS, was 67, and was killed, along with his son Ariel, 22, when a drunken driver struck...
