Somehow, no one beyond the police discovered just how bad it looked. The cops called Soona, but Fualaau family lawyer Robert Huff says they spoke with her "for half a minute" before allowing Mary to tell Soona a G-rated version of the incident. "Mary's a great talker," Huff says, "and Soona calmed down." Soona then told the police it was O.K. for Vili to go home with Mary; for reasons that aren't clear, the police didn't press the issue. They never informed Mary's school, and they decided there wasn't enough evidence to file charges...

Their efficiency and longevity presented certain problems to director Richard Linklater (Slacker) and his co-screenwriters. He has cast some of Hollywood's hottest young guns--notably Matthew McConaughey, who plays smart very well, and Ethan Hawke, who has a nice slippery charm as the gang's smoothest talker. Best of all, Linklater chose ER's Julianna Margulies to play the woman McConaughey courts and marries. She is beguiling both in her initial skepticism and in her loyalty when things start to go bad for the boys...

Inasmuch as Talker Fox, through his recent acquisition of Loew's, Inc., had become possibly Greatest Film Man (succeeding Adolph Zukor, head of Paramount-Famous Players-Lasky Corp.) his announcement was widely interpreted as "dooming" the silent picture. Furthermore, as Mr. Fox also announced that he had secured the services of some 200 "legitimate" actors, stage-directors, dialog writers and dramatists, singers, dancers and musical comedy producers and composers, it was also felt that the entire theatrical world...

Even the N.B.A.'s off season can't sideline basketball's mouthiest trash talker. Spike Lee is calling the shots on the set of He Got Game. DENZEL WASHINGTON had to adapt his style to Spike's X's and 0's. Denzel's screen personas usually range from the inhumanly brave to the downright angelic, but in Game he plays the ultimate deadbeat dad. His character, Jake Shuttlesworth, is doing time for killing his wife. Freedom beckons, in the form of a Governor's pardon, if he can persuade his estranged son Jesus, a high school basketball star played...

...bluster or bombast. "It is not the Chinese way to brag about 'how great I am,'" says Li Xiumin. What villagers respect and what they vote for is practical achievement. "If there is no proof you can do things, the voters think you are just an empty talker, and you will never win," she says. By the time elections come round, voters already know who can deliver and who can't and cast their ballots with little fanfare. When leaders were appointed, says Li Dongju, they did not always know what was good for the village, and they could...
