Still, those eyes often have little to do with the law: A white girl, blonde and well-dressed, with a leather skirt and wonderful white thighs surging underneath, stands tall on the stand in front of the court. She looks back at the spectators over her shoulder with one eye, brushing her hair back. It is the coldest look I have ever seen. The old man across the aisle says, "Goddam long hair, has to keep it out of her eyes." He wants her too. Her parents, squat and ugly, a mother with a loaf of bread for a head...
ARLO GUTHRIE: ARLO (Reprise). In his first album, Alice's Restaurant, Woody Guthrie's boy created a piece of instant Americana: a talking blues that wrapped an antiwar protest inside a hilarious tall tale. A classic is a hard thing to live down, especially for a performer of 21. Inside, in the assembly hall of the Christ Church parish house, a tall man with gray hair was blowing up an enormous white balloon--at least six feet in diameter--with an air pump. His name was Ted Moynihan, and he wore black leotards...
...saying, "We're going to use our bodies to express emotions." She asked them to choose an emotion. "Happiness," one of the boys suggested: so for a while they were happy, then thankful, then obsessed, then lonely, and then sad. "I can't seem to do this," said a tall boy in corduroy pants and a bright polka dot shirt. "There isn't enough space. I wish we were on a football field." The leader of the group tried to help him, while the others paired off to express themselves...
