Sitting cross-legged on pillows that they had brought from their hotel rooms, the crowd of 700 neatly dressed middle-aged and middle-class couples were mesmerized by the tall, slender, blond woman in front of them. Dressed in a starched white Oriental tunic over gray sweat pants and sneakers, J.Z. Knight, 40, sat on a makeshift stage in a sturdy armchair surrounded by a veritable garden of lavender flowers. Her voice, almost preternaturally husky, seemed to take on a gamut of accents from European to Indian as she spouted a relentless stream of imperatives about self-reliance...

...mental hospital, college students and office workers who line up at local coffee shops. A stone's throw from the court is a strip joint advertising, in neon, "Mugs and Jugs." Nearby, a shop displays garish Valentine's Day wares: a larger-than-life knight in shining armor standing tall beside a Queen of Hearts. It's a costume shop, of course. Friday, Jan. 19. The day you were murdered. I stare at the TV, at your tall, thin body lying dead on the sidewalk of a busy street in Istanbul . ...loathed him on principle. Let me explain: he's charismatic, confident, talented, tall, young, handsome and has lots of hair. The press release issued by his publicist describes him as "debonair with a touch of degenerate dandy." He describes his sound on his MySpace page as "Beck via Queen and Elton John and a touch of Rufus W.[ainwright]." He appears to be having fun. Did I mention the full head of hair? I'd been given an advance copy of Life in Cartoon Motion, Mika's debut album due Feb. 5, but I'd been reluctant to play...
