...police dubbed the gang the pishtacos, based on colonial folklore of a tall, white male who wears a broad-rimmed hat and roams the highlands, stealing the fat - and sometimes the eyes - of unsuspecting travelers. The pishtaco is equivalent to Bigfoot in the U.S. northwest or the chupacabra in the southwest. Everyone has a tale, but the creature remains elusive. (See the 25 crimes of the century...
...years ago, an adviser went to Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum with a plan for a tall office building. "Only 90 stories?" the ruler of Dubai asked. The aide was sent back to the drawing board, with instructions to design the highest structure not just in Dubai, not just in the Middle East, but in the world. When the Burj Dubai has its grand opening in January, it will be an 818-meter monument to the visionary autocrat who dreamed the Dubai dream - and, as it turns out, a conspicuous symbol of the hyper-ambition that now threatens...
...Park Hyatt Shanghai is so tall that by the time your shirts have been sent from your room to the ground-level laundry and back, they've traveled a distance of nearly a kilometer. In fact, sheer altitude dominates almost every facet of this 492-m property. Dinners in the world's tallest restaurant, and drinks in the world's highest pub, are filled with breathless gawking at the cityscape below. A pair of huge 150-ton dampers - weights that absorb the motion of a swaying building - eliminate sloshing in the world's loftiest pool. The world's fastest elevators...
Kilpatrick's story is, by any measure, tragic. He was born into one of Michigan's powerful political families. His mother Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick was until recently chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus. Tall and brawny, he played football at historically black Florida A&M University, studied law and rose quickly as a young representative in Michigan's legislature. By 2001, he was elected Detroit's mayor at age 31, partly by energizing this city's disaffected youth. His flashy suits, diamond-stud earrings and inaugural "club crawls" proclaimed his comfort with being called "America's first hip-hop mayor...
Ndesandjo had shunned the limelight until now. He is one of two children born to Barack Obama Sr. and his third wife, an American teacher named Ruth Nidesand, whom Obama Sr. met while the two were students at Harvard. Tall and slim like the President, Ndesandjo had avoided any association with the Obama name. For most of his life, he used only his stepfather's Tanzanian surname, Ndesandjo, but he has now added Okoth, a word from the language of his father's Kenyan tribe, the Luo, as well as his original surname, Obama. (See Barack Obama's family tree...
