...politics of hate, trumpeting white supremacy under the guise of states' rights. Reagan proclaimed this message in his 1980 campaign in the same Mississippi county where the famous civil rights workers Cheney, Schwerner and Goodman were murdered. Republicans can also scapegoat the poor. "Welfare queen" rhetoric now seems tame. Republican congressional representatives have started referring to welfare recipients as "wolves" and "crocodiles...

Another film which is also relatively tame by today's standards, Michelangelo Antonioni's "Blow-Up" was shocking mainly for depicting a photographer's wanderings in the mod scene of 60's England, involving a little playful nudity and a pot party along the way. But the film best demonstrates how underlying themes can make actually controversial elements seem worse. On the surface we see him taking photos of partially nude models and tumbling about with giggling teenagers--these "loose morals," perhaps, were controversial enough. Yet the deeper theme of the manipulative power of photography upon the mind affects...

It shows his 16-year-old stepbrother Henry Pelham absorbed in reverie in front of a red curtain, his gaze slightly raised like a Guido Reni saint as he toys with a gold chain. The other end of the chain is attached to a tame flying squirrel nibbling a nut. Everything in the painting is a show of skill in illusion: the squirrel's pelt, the reflections and the thread of white highlight on the mahogany tabletop, the glass of water (to show how well he could do transparency), the boy's fresh, young skin...

Ruling on new evidence in the O.J. Simpson murder trial, Judge Lance Ito said jurors could hear only two relatively tame snippets--out of at least 41 instances--in which ex-L.A.P.D. detective Mark Fuhrman used the word nigger on a screenwriter's interview tapes. The decision enraged Simpson's defense lawyers, who had been counting on the tapes to bolster their contention that Fuhrman--who denied on the stand that he had used the epithet--is a racist who planted the famous bloody glove at Simpson's home in order to frame him. Earlier in the week, with...
