Last week an ex-conservative named Philip Guston gave an answer of sorts. Painter Guston's reputation is solidly based on complex still lifes and figure paintings. His tame, placid portrait of a plump-armed girl won top honors at the 1945 Carnegie exhibition of U.S. painting. Three years ago, Guston turned his back on easy success, joined the abstractionist ranks. His latest exhibition in a Manhattan gallery features huge canvases thinly blotched with pale colors, and greyish ribbons of paint trailing, snail-like, over slush-hued backgrounds. His sketch for the exhibition catalogue, an apparently random doodle...
...Grand Tour (by Elmer Rice) is like an off night at the movies. The first half is a tame travelogue about a school-marm's trip to Europe. The second half is nickelodeon stuff about the banker she falls in love with and his confession of embezzling. Not only is she willing, to marry him and share his disgrace, she would even give him back to the wife he loves better...
...this tame foundation, Scripter Melville Shavelson attempts to build a wild farce involving missing bank funds, a $60,000 horse-race parlay, and a remarkably uninspired police chase. At regular intervals, Groucho Marx appears to give advice to the lovelorn, but his best bits have no relation to the plot and are palely reminiscent of scenes from earlier Marx Brothers movies. Among its other novelties, Double Dynamite does a reverse on standard Hollywood nepotism: it was produced by 3 3 -year-old Irving Cummings Jr., and directed by his 63-year-old father...
...stilted boy-meets-girl romance between a Roman commander (Robert Taylor) and a Christian hostage (Deborah Kerr) who, as the ads say, must struggle between her faith and "his powerful masculine appeal." Between Actor Taylor's woodenness and the coyly pallid playing of Actress Kerr, the struggle seems tame enough to justify one unconsciously comic lapse into domesticity. After Deborah is snatched from the stake and Christianity bests Nero's regime in a spectacular upheaval of death and destruction, Commander Taylor bids goodbye to his trusted friend: "Come visit us in Sicily, and bring Drusilla and the children...
...Mena, Ark., while the Campa Bros, circus trumpeted through its one-night stand, nine-year-old Maria Campa, granddaughter of one of the circus owners, was clawed and chewed to death by a young lion considered so tame he was tied to a stake outside his cage. Next day, as the Campa circus trundled along the rain-slicked road toward Mount Ida, two trucks overturned. Nine beasts scampered into Ouachita National Forest. A pursuing posse brought down one of two escaped leopards and recaptured a tame black bear and a rhesus monkey. The other leopard prowled all night before being...
