...Jacques Deval and Lorenzo Semple Jr.) takes its theme from the famous Oriental legend-about the inevitability of fate-that also suggested John O'Hara's Appointment in Samarra. The doom-dodger in this some-what Oriental tale of French circus life is a much-besought tamer of tigers (Jan Farrand), who, fearing the future, gazes into the crystal ball of the magician (Louis Jourdan). ...brought down in 93-car trains which have to be eased cautiously down a 3% grade for nine miles under smoking brakes. Against the chance that the brakes might fail, special sidetracks were built to switch any runaways to an upgrade. Once off the hill and on a tamer grade, the 91-mile railroad winds through a palm-tufted savannah, a rocky badlands where flash floods can fill dusty ravines with ten feet of water in a few minutes, and finally a sandy semidesert to the Caroni river...

...circus handyman in love with her are merely displaced Hollywood juveniles. Gloria Grahame as the circus manager's sultry young wife and Adolphe Menjou as a secret-police officer carry more conviction, but the best performances are bits, e.g., Alex D'Arcy as a fatuously handsome lion tamer, Hansi as a circus dwarf, Dorothea Wieck as an equestrienne...
