Death Of A World starts off on another tangent. Mionnet, a young priest who successfully saved a bishop from scandal in an earlier volume, is sent to Rome by Gurau and Poincare to spy on Cardinal Merry del Val, Papal Secretary of State who Gurau believes is intriguing with Germany. In Rome, Mionnet collects scandals about the Cardinal and is at the point of buying a blackmailer's documents when he is summoned to the Vatican to interview Merry del Val himself. There the plot breaks off, with Mionnet, like the hero of an old-fashioned movie serial, dangling...
...mythical baker's dozen of savants who were supposed to be the only men in the world able to understand the Einstein theory of relativity. At Harvard's Tercentenary celebration in 1936, he showed how to bisect a "horn angle" (an angle formed by two curves tangent to each other), a problem which had stumped mathematicians for 2,000-odd years. His fun: talking to children...
...Chicago, one Yee Haim, ex-national president of the Hip Sings in Pittsburgh, two in San Francisco, and two-Chin Joo Hip and Chin Joo Hip Jr.-in Butte. Perimeter of the wide circle of underworld associations of which Chin Joo Hip was the hub appeared to be tangent to an even more notorious crime ring. One of the four women caught by the Narcotics Department's dragnet was Mary de Bello whose husband, Thomas ("Tommy the Bull") Pennachio, is currently serving a 25-year sentence in Sing Sing for compulsory prostitution which he received after Special Rackets Prosecutor...
...Supreme Court Justices, who are appointed for life, can really settle down in Washington. Senatorial families usually find it safer to rent a house than buy one. F. F. V.'s and Mayflower Bostonians may consider Washington society a cosmopolitan free-for-all except in those small circles tangent to their own, but to the vast majority of U. S. housewives, a Senator's wife is well above the social timberline. Commoners who suspect that Senators' wives them selves sometimes share this view will find their worst suspicions confirmed by Capital Kaleidoscope and Mrs. Copeland...
Professor Edward Kasner of Columbia University announced that he had measured and bisected the "horn angle" - the angle between two curves tangent to each other. The ancient Greeks decided that the horn angle was a zero, could therefore be neither measured nor bisected; Isaac Newton and his successors, having no luck with the problem, were constrained to agree. Dr. Kasner solved the problem with four unreal numbers. When the angle is bisected in his geometrical system, the sum of the halves is greater than the whole. And if one of the curves is considered to be a straight line, each...
