...mecca of the swimming world will be Harvard's Indoor Athletic Pool today and tomorrow, as the greatest collection of tank stars ever assembled compete in the nineteenth annual National Intercollegiate Swimming Championships...
...Paris. Plenty of other targets in the Paris factory belt waited their turn. The Farman and Salmson works had been hit-but the Citroën. Peugeot, Delahaye and Hispano-Suiza works, also humming away on war materials for Germany, had not. Near Paris, French optical firms are making tank periscopes, range finders, telescopic gun sights and other fire-control equipment for the Germans. At Levallois-Perret and La Courneuve, French armorers are making 25-and 47-mm. guns. The big Schneider plant at Le Creusot makes machine-gun barrels, jackets, breech blocks and screws. Before the surprise raid...
This record was not achieved because anyone ever found the much-talked-of cache of unused tank cars. It was accomplished by gathering all the tank cars formerly used for regional distribution (oil trucks are doing more short-haul work) and using them more & more efficiently. All tank-car trains now run on fast schedule from Texas to New York, from pipeline terminals in the Midwest to New England. To speed turnaround, tank cars are now spotted (i.e., switched to sidings) three times a day instead of once, unloaded seven days a week instead of five...
...Tank-car freight runs 4? a gallon from Texas against 1? for tankers (including war-risk insurance and war bonuses for crews). Oilmen figure tank cars will add $120,000,000 to their annual transportation bill, some $90,000,000 more than the recent 10? a gallon price boost will bring in. So last month oilmen tried again for a West-East pipeline, got turned down as they did last fall, because the pipeline they wanted required 500,000 tons of scarce steel plate. But they refuse to quit, still want a fat 21-inch pipeline to move...
...behind both lines-farmers weeping with outraged peasant piety as they destroy their crops; the obscure, invaluable labors of guerrilla warriors and of the ten million who form the labor battalions of the People's Army; the structure and façade of an entire people at war. Tank, infantry, sea and air engagements, if as consistently heroic as here reported, would have backed the Nazis off the Atlantic coast long ago. Gummy on every page with the fancy frosting of party journalists, The Voice of Fighting Russia is a sort of mirror maze in which truth and half...
