...American M1 Abrams tanks maneuver through war games on the West German plain, NATO strategists worry about how to protect them from increasingly powerful Soviet antitank missiles. Since at least World War II, Soviet doctrine has placed extraordinary emphasis on offense, specifically on the use of massive tank and artillery formations as well as swift-moving mechanized infantry units.
