Perhaps the Germans were worried about Finland's recent overture to the Allies and wished to woo Helsinki with honors. Last week a New York Times correspondent cabled from Stockholm that Väino Alfred Tanner, potent leader of Finland's Socialist Democratic Party, and many another Finnish leader were now determined to sue for a separate peace with Russia...
...society. His grandiose plan, which fizzled, was to anneal all social disparities through the use of "solfa," the powerful archaic open scale which artisans and farmers still knew from the Middle Ages, but which the musically literate upper classes had begun to scorn. In Boston the one-eyed crippled tanner, William Billings, was even bolder. He got the cello into church, and the much more needed pitch pipe. Juho was sent with Väinö Tanner to Moscow in 1939 before the first Finnish-Soviet war. On that occasion the belly-laughing banker had been given the job of delaying the negotiations as much as possible, so the Finns would get better terms. In most of the talks, while Tanner and Viacheslav Molotov did the hard-headed bargaining, Paasikivi swapped jokes with Stalin and used...
