Dave Isay: I was a radio documentary producer for public radio for about 20 years. I did a documentary about 15 years ago with two kids growing up on the south side of Chicago, in a housing project. I gave them tape recorders and had them record a diary of their life for one week, and do interviews with family members and friends. And I saw when I gave these kids the tape recorders - when, for instance, one of the kids crawled into bed with his grandmother with a tape recorder - that the microphone gave him the license...
...parents had died in the flu epidemic of 1918. They were orphans, and she raised up her sisters. And I interviewed her and two of her sisters. My grandmother died when I was 15; the other sisters died; and when I was 17, I went looking for that tape. I wasn't able to find it. But even if you can't get to a StoryCorps site, I really encourage people to take time during the holidays and grab a relative and go into a quiet room, close the door, and if you have a video recorder or a tape recorder or just a pad and pencil, take 40 minutes, 50 minutes or an hour and just ask them about their lives...It's a hectic time, but the greatest gift you can give is this gift of listening...
