Leggers & Muggers. The crooks that merchants fear most are the professionals, many of whom work for fences and steal selectively (current high-priority target: suede coats). Store detectives never cease to marvel at the professionals' ingenuity. Some have been known to take six dresses into a fitting room, emerge wearing all of them, one over the other, and march right out of the store. Others employ such traditional equipment as the "booster box"-a gift-wrapped package with a spring-loaded trap opening-or the "Harpo Marx" coat, a shapeless, voluminous outer garment that, inside, is a marvel...
...National Institutes of Health also decided in 1963 that the eventual remedy for incurable heart disease must lie in a complete artificial heart, and set 1972 as the tentative target date for getting one to work. Last year N.I.H. concluded that this was unrealistic at this time, and dumped much of the $8,700,000 available into research grants for the perfection of "half-hearts"-devices to assist the left ventricle, or take over its work entirely for a time...
What How I Won The War proves is that a serious anti-war movie cannot be told in the same cacciatore style that works so well with the Beatles or Zero Mostel in a toga. Of the welter of punches Lester aims at his broad target, only a few can land with appreciable force. The rest necessarily have to deflect off each other, mutually weakening themselves. When John Lennon, in his non-Beatle debut, dies, he dies in a realistic ugly field with realistic blood spewing from his abdomen. But he doesn't just die realistically. He sits there, observes...
...more puzzling effect to confound him: relativistic aberration, the apparent shift of visible stars toward the direction of the spacecraft's motion. Thus, the computer showed, as the craft approached 45 Eridani at ever increasing velocities, other stars in the sky began to converge toward the target star. At 90% of the speed of light, only a few stars remained visible through the rear window. In a nightmarish finale to Moskowitz's flight, the remainder of the visible universe-stars, galaxies, nebulas-seemed to collapse into a single point and simultaneously disappear...
When United Auto Workers Boss Walter Reuther emerged from a conference with his top aides one day last week, Detroit expected to hear the ritualistic announcement of a strike dead line at General Motors Corp. Instead, Reuther slyly proclaimed what he called a "target date" of Dec. 14. Only if there is no settlement by that time, explained Walter, would an actual dead line be set - for some time after the first of next year. Reason for the move: by avoiding an early strike, the union's 372,000 G.M. workers will be assured of their two paid holidays...
