Those who admire Jarrell admire his taste, and it is fortunate that he was always right in his criticism, for he wrote with an authoritarian voice that could have sounded smart-aleck were he ever a shade off target. At times he seems to reach out from the page, shake the reader by the collar, and command "Like It!" with dictums like "these lines are so good that even admiration feels like insolence, and one is ashamed of anything one can find to say about them...
...target area of the grant will be a 268-acre region north of Central Square, described in the City's application as having "substandard housing, pockets of blight, overcrowding and mixed land use, and inadequate facilities." Using the facilities of Harvard and M.I.T., and relying heavily on the judgments of residents in the affected area, the program will attempt to achieve long range stability for the neighborhood. In a speech to a meeting of white ministers in New York City recently, Floyd McKissick, national director of the Congress of Racial Equality, announced that a major project of Negro militants is to expose "those who prostitute the church." McKissick charged that predominantly white denominations have used comparatively little of their tax-exempt financial resources to aid the Negro, and warned that they must "reevaluate themselves in terms of Black Power and the needs of black men." CORE plans to publicize what it considers disparities between church preaching and practice...
...addition to Dow and the CIA, a tempting target for antiwar protesters is Government-sponsored secret research carried out on many university campuses. In response to faculty protests, the University of Pennsylvania recently canceled its contracts with the Defense Department to study chemical and biological warfare. The Universities of Pittsburgh and Minnesota are debating similar action; Stanford and N.Y.U. have applied severe restrictions to such work. Last week there were sit-ins and teach-ins at Michigan, protesting military research at the university. At Princeton, students have been bitterly protesting the use of university land for a government-founded Institute...
