Despite their misgivings about Nixon, most Midwest citizens stop short of calling for impeachment. Many wish he would resign, but few hold out much hope for that. John Bauswein, 26, a registered Republican who runs a tavern in Cleveland, worries that impeachment would tarnish the country's image abroad: "I support the President only in that I don't want him impeached. I don't want the country further embarrassed." Some Midwesterners feel that impeachment would disfranchise them. Says Marjorie Bohac of Kimball, Neb.: "A vocal minority is trying to accomplish by impeachment and removal...

...this christening would be of dubious value. Nixon's public approval rating hovers near an historic low point. Under normal circumstances, the resignation of a vice president would reflect badly on his president. But in Nixon's case, the mirror is already so murky that one more bit of tarnish won't make much difference...

...what made Kim's disappearance puzzling was its total lack of logic, even from Park's viewing stand. Despite his showing in the 1971 elections, Kim has never been a serious threat to Park, and any injury to him by Park's agents can only tarnish the dictator's already smudgy image abroad. So illogical did the whole affair seem, indeed, that some thought the snatch might be the work of North Korea, out to damage the reputation of Park. Whatever the motives, 100 Japanese policemen were assigned the job of finding out what had happened...
