...Indian casinos deserve a bad rap. I'd like to point out the good that the casinos of Minnesota's Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwa have done. Prior to our casinos, we had nothing. There was no source of clean water, we had tar-paper shacks for housing, and there were only dirt roads. Today, 14 years after passage of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act and the building of the Mille Lacs' casinos, we have all the amenities of a good community. We have safe drinking water, modern housing, good roads and, best of all, jobs for our people...

Researchers have long assumed that it was tobacco's tar and carcinogenic chemicals that were primarily to blame for many lung cancers. But a new study suggests that nicotine also plays a critical role in promoting lung cancer and increasing its risk. If so, what does that mean for ex-smokers who rely on nicotine patches, gums and sprays? The ruling comes one week after E.U. authorities agreed to ban most forms of cigarette advertising. Tobacco firms slammed the decision as flawed, but there is little they can do. And while it may cost companies tens...

...Perhaps the best spot to enjoy the capital's new low-tar greenery is Lodi Garden. This well-kept park in the city center encloses some pleasant, leafy walks as well as a number of 15th century tombs, including that of ruler Mohammad Shah of the Sayyid dynasty, which is an early example of the style that would later culminate in the Taj Mahal. More importantly, it is also home to the Lodi Garden Restaurant, a delightful upmarket establishment that distinguishes itself by combining in one place all four rarities of the New Delhi dining scene: outdoor tables, palatable Continental...

...relief of Egyptologists, today there's no need to keep grinding up those mummies. In 1856, William Henry Perkin, a bright, just-18-year-old chemistry student, was looking for a synthetic substitute for quinine, a cure for malaria. Perkin was at home, doing experiments infusing coal tar with hydrogen and oxygen?and had failed. Washing out his test tubes, he noticed a residue that resulted in a "strangely beautiful color"?mauve. Hidden inside a lump of coal tar, writes Finlay, was "the potential for thousands of colors." This is where most of our dyes come from...
