...chain-smoking con girl in Paper Moon, a hard-throwing Little League pitcher in The Bad News Bears. For her next number, Tatum O'Neal, all of 12, will dance back to the screen as a budding hoofer in Nickelodeon, Director Peter Bogdanovich's new film about 1920s Hollywood. Not to be outdone by Co-Star Jane Hitchcock, who once studied with Choreographer George Balanchine of the New York City Ballet, Tatum took a six-week crash course in tap dancing before stepping into her new role. Scarlatti Romp. If contemporary jazz has a new cynosure, it is Pianist Keith Jarrett, 31. A virtuoso performer who was trained in the classics, Jarrett is a flawless, controlled technician who scales melodic altitudes that recall the late piano genius Art Tatum. Jarrett's great gift is improvisation, which he weaves effortlessly for as much as 25 minutes at a sitting. His textures are densely contrapuntal, his melodies sometimes Chopinesque. Three books became movies; Tatum O'Neal, playing Brown's memorable tomboy Addie Pray in Paper Moon, won the 1973 Academy Award for best supporting actress...
Heavy Hitter. To beef up his goofball outfit, Buttermaker recruits a couple of sawed-off powerhouses. Amanda Whurlitzer (Tatum O'Neal), the tomboy daughter of an old flame of Buttermaker's, is expert in the fine art of the fastball and the spitter; Kelly Leak (Jackie Earle Haley), a local terror who chain smokes and rides a Harley, is a heavy hitter. He also has the hots for Amanda. With Kelly and Amanda on the team, the Bears start...
