There's a taut grandeur to Full Frontal, in part because Julia the box-office queen is encased in an ensemble cast of attractive, accomplished actors. And mainly because Hough recombines devious devices of old melodrama and comedy: the love (or hate) letter left to be discovered, two sisters involved in shady dalliances in separate rooms at the same hotel. Hough wraps this all in brittle wit; imagine the coolest cocktail conversation, then put it in a movie...

...next morning, our first day of sailing, dawned brilliant and warm. As the sun rose higher, a stiff breeze rolled over the hills of Selayar, and the crew prepared to cast off. The passengers watched rapt as the five-man crew pulled lines taut and the two green and white striped sails caught the wind and filled with a snap. Some guests pitched in to help, others baited hooks and fished off the stern. A few hours later we arrived at a pristine beach surrounded by coral heads at the southern tip of the island. ...Joel Stein's article, he lists the rules for how to create a modern blockbuster. I disagree with Rule 4: "Don't Worry Too Much About the Writing." ...solos around more than four notes as he was of including more than one of those notes in a single bowing. His frantic, headbanging sawing on “Lie In” was unquestionably high energy and exhilarating at times, but was not nearly as articulate as the taut, focused solos of saxophonist Leroi Moore...

...unseasonably cold Virginia afternoon I gathered with my family on the first Friday of spring break to bury my grandfather. An unremitting wind tore through Arlington National Cemetery and challenged the practiced precision of six young Marines as they reverently unfolded an American flag and held it taut over the remains of one of their own. With unblinking solemnity they stood still and strong against the wind while 50 feet away seven other Marines aimed their rifles at the sky and, on command, fired three sharp volleys. As the echo of the final shots reverberated through the cemetery, a lone...
