...next morning, our first day of sailing, dawned brilliant and warm. As the sun rose higher, a stiff breeze rolled over the hills of Selayar, and the crew prepared to cast off. The passengers watched rapt as the five-man crew pulled lines taut and the two green and white striped sails caught the wind and filled with a snap. Some guests pitched in to help, others baited hooks and fished off the stern. A few hours later we arrived at a pristine beach surrounded by coral heads at the southern tip of the island. Divers readied their gear...
...Joel Stein's article, he lists the rules for how to create a modern blockbuster. I disagree with Rule 4: "Don't Worry Too Much About the Writing." Spider-Man is actually well written; its taut script mixes serious and thoughtful characterization with over-the-top action and excitement. People are genuinely moved by some of the film's more dramatic scenes. It is this emotional component of Spider-Man's tortured-soul brand of heroism--as he realizes that his loved ones could be put in danger because of his superheroics and that happiness will often take a backseat...

His frantic, headbanging sawing on “Lie In” was unquestionably high energy and exhilarating at times, but was not nearly as articulate as the taut, focused solos of saxophonist Leroi Moore...

An unremitting wind tore through Arlington National Cemetery and challenged the practiced precision of six young Marines as they reverently unfolded an American flag and held it taut over the remains of one of their own. With unblinking solemnity they stood still and strong against the wind while 50 feet away seven other Marines aimed their rifles at the sky and, on command, fired three sharp volleys. As the echo of the final shots reverberated through the cemetery, a lone...
...buzzing around J.J., like Moscone the fly around sly-fox Volpone, is Curtis' Sidney. Mackendrick mentioned the Ben Jonson play to the actors as they shot outside "21" late one night; but he might also have said that Sidney was the fly to J.J.'s taut, watchful spider, and 52nd Street was his web. Whatever Sidney's floating status as villain and victim, Curtis was the victor in the movie. I'll bet that when he first read the script he thought exultantly, "That's me all over!" Curtis may have spent the 50s playing pretty boys at Universal...
