Though a plot as old as The Hill's can well be a handicap, U.S. Director Sidney Lumet (The Pawnbroker) nails the action of this spiky British drama into so taut a frame that an audience can feel every jab in the belly, taste every mouthful of dust. It is less easy to hear the dialogue, much of it delivered in accents too angry or authentic for swift comprehension. Yet the lines thrown away are scarcely missed because Lumet crowds the screen with strong, spare imagery built around the fearful mound. After a ghastly ordeal on the hill, filmed...
...Miss., where three civil rights workers were slain a year ago, nine Negroes attended the Neshoba County schools. When a white boy threw a pop bottle at a Negro girl, Principal Prentice Copeland promptly paddled the troublemaker's bottom, put him on probation and made him apologize. Despite taut racial tensions in Bogalusa, La., where violence occurred recently, hesitant Negro children followed their determined mothers into once all-white schools as police held off spectators. In Gainesboro, Tenn., Peggy Williams, 13, not only became the first Negro in the town's elementary school, but her 30 white classmates...
...investments. President Kennedy in 1961 created the Agency for International Development (AID) as a kind of holding company for all foreign operations, and later put his budget director, David E. Bell, in charge. Now Bell has served longer than any earlier aid boss and won a reputation for taut and canny administration...
...Ranh Bay on South Viet Nam's bulging east coast slipped a grey-hulled U.S. troop transport, its decks aswarm with the "Screaming Eagles" of the U.S. 101st Airborne Division. Sentries on the dock paced impassively, their faces shadowed under their helmet liners, their M-14 rifles riding taut from the slings. As the transport neared the dock, a cry went up from the 3,700 paratroopers: "Take a break! We're here!" The sentries, like veterans anywhere, smiled knowingly...
...good grisly thriller that never rises to the challenge of becoming something more. Contrived to leave viewers feeling scared silly rather than profoundly shaken, this tournament of terror spells instant stardom for two relatively uncelebrated English performers, Samantha Eggar and Terence Stamp, although Stamp is seriously miscast. From a taut beginning to a breath-stopping climax, the drama seizes attention, yet misses nearly all the depth and subtlety of the small sinister bestseller on which it is based...
