...first saw Jodie in the movie Taxi Driver, which was the summer of 1976. I saw her over and over and over again over the next five years. I saw all of her movies and most of her TV appearances. My devotion for Jodie became an obsession in the summer of 1980 when I found out she would be attending Yale University in the fall of '80. The magazines like to call my love an erotomanic obsession. I don't even know what that means. All I know is that I was her number one fan and wanted...

...Best of the West, ABC is making another error by invoking yet again the "gang comedy" spirit of The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Ed Weinberger and Stan Daniels, producers of Moore's show, Taxi and The Associates, should know by now that the basic format-a bland central character surrounded by screwballs -works only when the star has a patient and loyal following, as Moore did. Many of this year's most expensive business destinations are obscure spots in the Third World. In Accra, Ghana, a three-mile taxi ride costs $10.92. A drink in a bistro in Kinshasa, Zaïre, is $6.05. The most expensive city in the world at present is Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados, where U.S. companies, including TRW, Intel and Playtex, operate manufacturing plants to take advantage of low wage rates. A hotel room with breakfast there is a stunning $155.36. The world's least expensive city this year, as last, is Peking. A capitalist looking...

...ultimately, it's this quality of keeping the characters complex and bored Americans--not Bergman's cartherisized Swedes or Scorcese's narcoticized totems--that makes Cutter's Way so extraordinary. Not since Taxi Driver has an American film been so successful at showing us American in a whole new light, and hever has one managed it with such control of its self-conscious and cinematic form. Passer has come closer to making a masterpiece than anyone in the past few years...
