...Martin Scorsese, who won the Best Director Globe for The Departed, but he's been disappointed so often before - five Oscar nominations without winning, and not even a nod for Taxi Driver or Casino - that it might be imprudent for Scorsese to stoke his hopes one more time. It'll be even creepier that, this time, he's the favorite...

...Nyonya was at an outdoor food court in Kuala Lumpur. The dish was Chicken Kapitan, a coconut-laced curry redolent with tamarind, turmeric and shrimp paste. The waiter who delivered the bowl of curry was Malay. With me were TIME's Malaysia stringer, an ethnic Indian, and our taxi driver, a Chinese. Both snuck spoonfuls of gravy from my dish. I didn't mind. There was more than enough for all of us to share...

What made the whole setup especially beautiful was the fact that disclosure requirements were a joke. Lawmakers had to file the dates they flew and amounts they paid for the travel, but not where they...

DIED. Peter Boyle, 71, actor who created some of show biz's most memorable eccentrics, both comedic and brutal, in films including Taxi Driver (a philosophical cabbie) and The Candidate (a shrewd campaign manager) and on the TV hit Everybody Loves Raymond (the title character's hilariously insensitive dad); of multiple myeloma and heart disease; in New York City. He chose acting after an unhappy stint as a monk and won seven Emmy nominations as Frank Barone on Raymond. His signature was finding vulnerability or humor in flawed characters, as in a masterly scene from the 1974 film Young Frankenstein...
