...screenwriter (Taxi Driver) and director (Patty Hearst), Schrader specializes in people spiraling into madness; for him it is their purest, most photogenic state. Affliction dawdles over small-town life: lots of boozy bonhomie and dazed snarling. The raging losers here often seem like sullen stereotypes. We could also have done without Nolte's self-crucifixion scene. But the actor finds truth in Wade's emotional clumsiness, in the despair of a man who hasn't the tools or the cool to survive. There are too many of these men in life, and not enough films that tell their sad tales...
When we first teamed up at ABC in the mid-'70s, broadcast television was still a heady and vibrant place. We were thrilled when we heard someone mention a show we had helped get on--Soap, maybe, or Barney Miller or Taxi. We learned from our favorite bosses, Fred Silverman and Michael Eisner, that a good programmer respects the audience, takes risks, has showman-like instincts and lives to bring the best and brightest talent to the people...
...graduated from Yale in 1921 and worked briefly on Wall Street but got thoroughly bored. Planes fascinated him, though. Trippe was convinced that the future of travel was in the air. For producer David Merrick, whose Broadway show The Matchmaker needed a little extra coverage, he dressed an orangutan in a chauffeur's suit and set the creature at the wheel of a specially rigged taxi. With Moran steering from the back, the two set off down Broadway with the legend I'M ON MY WAY TO THE MATCHMAKER! blazoned on the car. There was a traffic accident--and incalculable publicity...
Reaching Inman Square is easiest by bus route #69, a bumpy ride to say the least. Traveling along in a big T-bus, the rider can immediately sense the proximity of the quasi-industrial-suburban climate of Somerville. The bus might be easy, but a taxi is generally recommended, since the usual reason to come here is for a date. On a nice summer afternoon, it's not too far for a walk. Of course, how many Harvard students have seen a nice summer afternoon in Cambridge...
