Although the woman was clad in an abaya, a full-length black gown, a gesticulating mutawwa seemed bothered that her face and ankles were not covered, too. He shoved her into a taxi, pawed her robe open and denounced her as a Filipina gahbah (Filipina prostitute). She was interrogated, forced to confess and sent to a prison for women. There she might have remained if not for the connections of her British husband, who was able to convince Prince Salman, the governor...

Indeed, I'd stack this year's Easter Egg episode of South Park, or last year's Dog Whisperer, or half a dozen of the Butters shows, against nearly any recent film that has won the top Oscar or critics...

Neither of us managed to wheedle a seat at the dinner, so I ventured out instead. Leaving the bubble was a mistake. Seconds after my taxi dropped me off on a nearby street lined with restaurants, I was accosted by a woman who insisted on walking with me, then demanded money for her time. When I refused, she shoved her hand into my jacket pocket and tussled furiously with me in an effort to grab my cash. I got away, my money intact but my jacket in tatters, and headed back to the cocoon of my hotel...
