...famous John Scopes Monkey Trial of 1925, in which a young schoolteacher was tried for teaching his science classes Darwin's theory of evolution--a practice forbidden by statute in his Bible-Belt state. The political orator William Jennings Bryan led the prosecution, while Clarence Darrow defended the teacher. Though the characters in Inherit the Wind are but thinly disguised, the playwrights have turned a sensationalistic trial into a lyrical clash between tradition and free thinking, with the two attorneys assuming the roles of opposing ideologies. This Thurs., Fri., and Sat., at the Loeb Ex. Tickets are free, but should...

According to the preliminary course enrollment figures issued by the Department, there are several graduate Economic courses with unusual student-teacher ratios. A few examples: Economics 2220, "Econometric Models," has two professors for three students. Economics 2420, "Seminar: Monetary and Fiscal Policy," has more than three professors for three students. A lot of idealism has washed away since then; a lot of liberals have perceived a rising of the dark. And now Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr., sometime teacher, sometime reviewer, sometime adviser, sometime historian, but always consummate storyteller, has come out with a massive remembrance of Bobby: Robert Kennedy and His Times. And the times, for Schlesinger, rise and fall very much in accordance with the fortunes of RFK, a man "who embodies the consciousness of an epoch...

There has been little torment and oppression in Huppert's own experience. She was the clever youngest daughter in a big, prosperous Parisian household, and her parents (her father is a manufacturer of safes, her mother an English teacher) were full of encouragement when she decided that she wanted to change her educational direction from Russian studies to acting. At 15, freckled, a bit chubby, with the look of a beauty five years before she would be beautiful, she had a small part in Faustine et le Bel Etc. Even then she was very much self-propelled...

...residents of Brno promote Janacek's work as hard as they play down his life-a chronicle so scandalous that, after 50 years, Brno still blushes and changes the subject when anyone mentions it. A choir director, conductor and organ teacher, Janacek at age 27 married one of his students, 16-year-old Zdenka Schulz, and lived unhappily ever after. Despite two children, Janacek humiliated his wife with his spectacular philandering. In less amorous moments, he found time to compose three minor operas and The Excursions of Mr. Brouček, a light, satirical tale about a flight...
