...first foot-ball game between Harvard and Yale freshman teams took place in Boston twelve years ago, when Harvard, '80, defeated Yale, '80, on the Boston Common by a score of three goals to nothing. Since then, with but three exceptions, freshman foot-ball games have been played every year, and in some years two games took place. In 1877, the Harvard freshmen again succeeded in defeating the Yale freshmen, winning two games, one at New Haven and one at Boston, and losing none. During the first half the game was hotly contested. Duane, captain of the Tech. team distinguished himself again and again by his powerful rushes and fine passing. As soon as the ball was in play it was rushed towards Williams goal. Williams returned with a kick which carried the ball near Tech's line. Durfee saved a touchdown by a series of fine rushes, gaining five yards at a time, and carried the ball into the middle of the field. Duane was hurt time and again, but pluckily kept on playing.
