DURING THE April crisis, these minor irritations were further inflamed. On the evening of the University Hall takeover, President Pusey released his first statement on the SDS demands. On the expansion demands he said: "There are no plans to tear down any apartments on University Road nor are any homes being torn down to make way for Harvard Medical School expansion." It seems incredible that Pusey could have supposed reporters would not investigate the conflicting claims, but it is hard to account for his statement otherwise...

...Radcliffe region faced a growing traffic problem and Mrs. Bunting announced plans for a huge underground garage to be built beneath the Radcliffe Quad. The garage would cost $750,000 and would hold 200 cars. It would also mean that Cliffies would have to watch construction crews tear up the Quad during the summer and next fall. When a pall of tear gas failed to budge the rioters, the army flew in troops and additional ammunition, while jets fired off warning bursts of machine-gun fire overhead. Finally, the army ordered soldiers to shoot anyone appearing on the streets without permission during a dusk-to-dawn curfew. But neither curfew nor martial law nor dire warnings could halt the general strike next day. In Córdoba, riots broke out anew, and police opened fire on a crowd of 2,000 marchers.
