...Squid with Backbone Your notebook item "Catch of the Century" reported on the hunt and temporary capture of an 8-m-long giant squid [Oct. 10]. You described how the squid finally freed itself by tearing off one of its 5.5-m-long tentacles, leaving it behind on the hook that had impaled it. Giant squids may not be the most likable of creatures, but do they deserve such treatment?
