NAIROBI, Kenya—It is my third visit in as many summers to sub-Saharan Africa. I now realize being even slightly bright-eyed and bushy-tailed was foolish. ...Finally entering Tyre was like entering a ghost town. There was no obvious damage, but there were almost no people. As we got deeper into town, near our hotel, more people appeared: young men sitting on plastic chairs watching the traffic and drinking tea. Our hotel is in a Christian area of town and considered safe from Israeli bombs. The young men are there to make sure no Hizballah fighters come in and bring the Jewish state's wrath down...

Aesih Irawan was drinking iced tea at a friend's house near the beach in Pangandaran, a resort town on the Indonesian island of Java, when the ocean crashed through the living room. The 27-year-old housewife was seized by the churning water and carried hundreds of meters down the beach before she became tangled in cable, which prevented her being swept out to sea. Irawan survived, but almost 700 people were killed, nearly 1,000 injured and some 20,000 families left homeless by the July 17 tsunami that hit a 177-km stretch of Java. Triggered...

There were reports of people serving tea, bread, and daal to survivors and friends at train stations, free rides home were offered and gratefully accepted, beds for lost travelers and survivors were provided by slum-dwellers, and people rushed to hospitals to donate blood, as blood types became more important than caste or religion in India?...
