Much Furby hype originated with the geek-chic set. The magazine you're reading is partly responsible. After Toy Fair '98, TIME ran a Techwatch item mentioning them. USA Today also noticed, and after an electronics fair in May, CBS This Morning did a segment. That ginned up interest last summer, even though Furby's complicated innards meant it wouldn't be ready for stores until fall...
...completely dismayed at the way Joshua Quittner showed an Internet success story in "Boogie Sites" [TECHWATCH, May 18] without reporting the consequent carnage. Quittner said of Scott Hirsch, proprietor of DoMeLive.com "It was easy to find customers--Hirsch just trolled Usenet for e-mail addresses." Quittner didn't mention what Hirsch leaves behind while building his business--the problem of unsolicited commercial e-mail, most commonly known as spam. Right now I have more than 1,000 spam messages in my e-mail In-box folder. Those of us who detest spam support the right of porn websites to exist...

Grove, who was in New York City last week to meet with analysts (word of another profitable year sent the stock up 5% last Friday), offered a glimpse of Intel's plans during an exclusive breakfast with TechWatch at the swank St. Regis Hotel.
