...sick and tired of long and tedious conversations in the backseat of my 1965 Mustang during which I tried (usually in vain) to convince some sweet Delta plantation princess that it was irrational for two healthy, mature adults to deny themselves the God-given pleasures of sexual play. I figured that anybody intelligent enough to get into Harvard would not let something as puerile as religious convictions prevent her from living a normal adult life. Sure, I wrote the perfunctory essay about how I was going to use my Harvard education for the benefit of mankind, or, at least...

...unpaid bills, and even that skill deserted him at the end. To Geoffrey and his younger brother Toby, their father's life was a matter of putting on heirs, of inventing a past that never was and promising a future that could never be. Endless rascality ultimately becomes tedious and irksome; all the world loves a confidence man until it discovers its wallet is missing. Yet Wolff's account of this misspent life is absorbing throughout. It is not just the story of "a wreck of a desperado," as he calls the Duke at one point...

If the definition is stretched a little, the entire New Testament might be considered an example of the art. The first real biography in English, however, did not come until 1791, when James Boswell published his Life of Johnson, which is still the classic by which all others are judged. "Be there a thousand lives, my great curiosity has stomach for 'em all," exclaimed Boswell; his nosy exuberance sends...

There might have been fun in Rocky II, but not with Stallone serving as writer and director. During its first half, the film offers tedious exposition that exists solely to keep the big fight at bay. The script's stalling techniques are random and far fetched. Stallone tries to create drama out of Rocky's inexplicable inability to gain steady employment, his domestic foibles and, finally, out of his wife's simultaneous bouts with childbirth and coma. These developments are so poorly conceived that Adrian's brother (a newly slim Burt Young) must dart...
