...echo-chamber effect which sometimes cuts in during a monologue becomes tedious very fast, and there are also a couple of thematic loose ends. For example, an early Lewis Carroll reference is not picked up again, and one may also wonder why Phebe seems to have turned into a refugee from Rent. But such glitches can easily enough be corrected by the players. If there are a few elements of Zayas's vision that don't strike a chord in the viewer, they're easily made up for by the overpowering richness of that vision as a whole...

...other words, Lyric Stage's production of Blithe Spirit fits the mold. Just as Coward himself was perceived in the first half of the century, it deserves both adoration and derision. Blithe Spirit is splendidly witty at some points and horribly tedious in others...

While the plot can be a bit predictable and tedious at times, it is salvaged by the spectacle of the circus surrounding it. Perhaps the most valuable supporting role belongs to the hotel itself. Inspired by a Niagara Falls honeymoon hotel, the Hotel de Love features outrageously creative "theme" rooms such as the "Garden of Eden" room, complete with tree, forbidden fruit and serpent, and the "The Grand Finale Passion Suite," modeled after a cricket stadium with astro-turf and recordings of cheering crowds. The rooms nearly steal every scene in which they appear...
