...held by Iranian militants and the unstable, faction-torn government of Ayatullah Ruhollah Khomeini. In a startlingly bold but tragic gamble, President Jimmy Carter had ordered a courageous, specially trained team of American military commandos to try to pluck the hostages out of the heavily guarded U.S. embassy in Tehran. The supersecret operation failed dismally. It ended in the desert staging site, some 250 miles short of its target in the capital city. And for the world's most technologically sophisticated nation, the reason for aborting the rescue effort was particularly painful: three of the eight helicopters assigned...

...Powers Resolution has occasionally been honored-as in 1980, when Jimmy Carter notified Congress of the attempt to rescue the U.S. hostages in Tehran, though his message came shortly after the mission had failed. Thus far, the long, debilitating war has been a military standoff. Neither side has a strategic advantage that would allow a major offensive to bring decisive results. But despite large infusions of money and arms from Saudi Arabia and the gulf states, Iraq is suffering more than Iran. Tehran's oil production is currently running about 2.2 million bbl. per day, compared with a maximum of 700,000 bbl. per day pumped by Iraq. Iraq is so strapped for cash that it has been unable to pay for many essential imports...

...claims to Bahrain. In 1979 a prominent ayatullah loudly proclaimed that Bahrain was Iran's 14th province. In 1981 the government foiled a plot to assassinate Sheik Isa and key members of his government. About 70 people were arrested; though details remain murky, Bahraini officials blame Tehran...
