...Iran's Uprising I was disappointed Joe Klein spent only 10 days in Iran, mostly in and around Tehran, and wrote a story speculating that nearly 50% of the Iranian people voted for Mahmoud Ahmadinejad [June 29 - July 6]. He should have talked to us Iranians who travel all over Iran and know how detested Ahmadinejad is in most jurisdictions. Please talk to more Iranians; you'll see that they overwhelmingly support a pro-Western, democratic government and not the rule of force and dark obscurantism. Darius Adle, Los Angeles
...Iranian government broke up an attempted memorial service at a cemetery, but very soon after, tens of thousands of protesters poured into the streets of central Tehran the night of July 30, overwhelming Iran's feared security forces. The crowds burned tires, honked horns, waved peace signs and chanted, "Death to the dictators." Because the demonstrators gathered in several neighborhoods throughout the capital as well as at the country's largest cemetery, 12 miles (20 km) south of the city center, the Basij paramilitary and Revolutionary Guards could not cover enough ground to control the growing crowds...
...crowds in Tehran did not disperse until sundown. "At about 8 p.m.," said an eyewitness, "I went through Vanak again and saw the Mad Max army of [Basij] motor bikes amassed," taking control of the city once more. "But for a few hours," the witness said, "I saw a look in many people's faces that I had not seen since the week after the election - a look that said, 'We can win this...

"We are not joking," he declared to the semi-official Fars news agency. "We will confront those who want to fight against the clerical establishment." The same day, Press TV, a state-sponsored broadcast station, reported that "an underground network providing foreign media outlets with photos and footage of the post-election unrest has been identified and arrested in Iran." Despite such threats and the existence of undercover Basij within the crowds, witnesses said that protesters...
...crowds dispersed throughout central Tehran. By 6 p.m., hundreds were gathered at main squares including Vali Asr, Vanak and Haft e-Tir, and the streets surrounding the Mossala grounds complex, where a Karroubi adviser said the opposition planned to hold a candlelight vigil. There the protesters confronted hundreds of Revolutionary Guards, who had sealed off the north side of the complex. Meanwhile, the capital's Haqqani expressway was jammed with cars - a strategy used by the protesters in recent weeks to stop the motorcycle Basij gangs. Many vehicles were honking their horns, their passengers waving the peace sign...
