Cuomo is not trendy. As the Governor himself proudly acknowledges in his recently published and thoughtful Diaries, he takes his Roman Catholicism, his family and his responsibilities to society very seriously. He has been deeply influenced by the thought of Jesuit Philosopher Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. His son Andrew, 26, is one of his closest aides. For a politician, Cuomo displays unusual ambivalence, even anguish, about some issues. Yet he can show hard-edged political courage as well. He has twice vetoed bills to re-establish the death penalty, even though a large majority of New Yorkers say they want...
Stephen Jay Gould appears to accept the popular charge that Pierre Teilhard de Chardin was involved in the conspiracy behind the Piltdown man forgery. Gould's accusation, however, has not been accepted by experts. J.S. Weiner, who first uncovered the hoax and then the hoaxer, dismissed Gould's account as worthless. British Scholar Kenneth Oakley, who originally supported Gould's contention that Teilhard faked the Piltdown fossil as part of a youthful prank, later changed his mind. After being shown evidence that contradicted Gould, Oakley declared that the basis of Gould's charge against Teilhard...
...unusual, indeed the bizarre, it is because, as he notes, "small items with big implications are my bread and butter." A confessed iconoclast, he likes nothing better than to take aim at major targets. Gould links that saintly man of the cloth and science, Jesuit Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, to the infamous Piltdown hoax (the faked fossil, says Gould, was apparently a youthful prank by Teilhard), and displays irreverence for even his great hero Charles Darwin. Says Gould: "If I have one special ability, it is as a tangential thinker. I can make unusual connections...
...apprenticeship at Wright's Taliesin West. Yet for all the frailty of Arcosanti's finances, Soleri has been able to maintain out side interest in his project for a decade. The mystique of his eclectic, quasi-religious creed, cribbed from sages as different as Matthew Arnold and Teilhard de Chardin (whose name will be on a huge cloister planned for Arcosanti), draws hundreds of visitors from around the world to the site each year. Many of them come to try out as children of the Arcosanti dream...
Gould's theory stirred an instant uproar. Says American Paleontologist George Gaylord Simpson, a friend of Teilhard's: "I don't think it was in his character." J.S. Werner, who with Oakley helped expose the forgery, doubts that Teilhard would have risked his burgeoning scientific career with such a ruse. Gould remains convinced it was a youthful joke that succeeded so well it made a confession difficult. Says he: "The burden of proof must now rest with those who would hold Father Teilhard blameless...
