...fade in to Sunday, Feb. 11, 1979, the evening of the most widely publicized programming matchup in TV history. On CBS: a rare telecast of Gone With the Wind. On NBC: the TV debut of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. On ABC: a much hyped TV movie, Elvis! Some network programmers grumble that this costly confrontation amounts to a three-way kamikaze mission. But it draws the crowds. Elvis! wins a 40% share of the viewing audience, Gone With the Wind gets 36%, and Cuckoo's Nest pulls in 32%. Does that add up to more than...
...have slipped badly in the ratings since the days of Roots and The Winds of War. Because of their high production costs and poor performance in reruns, they are rarely profitable. ABC's 30-hour version of War and Remembrance (the first 18 hours of which will be telecast in November) could lose up to $20 million for the network, ABC executives say, even if it does well in the ratings. These elephantine projects are probably doomed to extinction...
Technically, there will be no major innovations at the Seoul Games. These will be the first Olympics telecast in stereo, and, as at the Winter Games in Calgary, several tiny cameras will be mounted in unlikely spots -- at the top of the bar during the pole-vault competition, for example. NBC's biggest technical feat, however, will simply be to get the whole shebang ready in time. Problems started in February, when the network's 60,000-sq.-ft. broadcast center in Seoul was completed -- six weeks late. Network crews have been working hectic twelve-hour days to make...
...overall prime-time rating of 21.2 -- higher than the 19.3 garnered by this year's Winter Games but less than the 23.2 ABC drew four years ago in Los Angeles. If that goal is reached, NBC stands to make an estimated $50 million to $75 million on the telecast. Though the network has no insurance per se, its contract with the Korea Exchange Bank guarantees reimbursement for revenues lost because of any substantial disruption of the Games. As for the disruption of South Korea's clocks, the country will return to standard time on Oct. 9, a week after...
...Tonight. Bravo, a Philadelphia- based talk show focusing on Hispanic issues, is gearing up for nationwide syndication. The show will be taped, uniquely, in two versions: English and Spanish. By far the most ambitious upcoming project is El Pueblo/L.A., a 14- hour mini-series being planned by CBS for telecast in 1989. The series, produced by Actor Peter Strauss, will chronicle the interplay of cultures that helped shape the city of Los Angeles from 1840 to 1975. A Hispanic Roots? Maybe not. But if El Pueblo/L.A. scores big in the ratings, it could do what Roots did for blacks: turn...
