...Panorama showed a favorable five-minute report on McDonald's. Filmed at one of its restaurants in New York City, the segment highlighted the efficiency of the fast-food operation, an uncommon tribute in a land devoted to disdaining capitalism. The salute encouraged McDonald's to hope that its ten-year effort to open restaurants in the Soviet Union will at last succeed...

...Harrisburg, Ill., is giving away guns. In lieu of cash interest, the bank some time ago began offering a collector's set of three Smith & Wesson revolvers (retail value: $1,300) for new certificates of deposit. To get the guns, a customer can deposit $2,000 for a ten-year term, for example, or $30,000 for six months. The bank estimates that the weapons are worth the equivalent of 10% annual interest over ten years. The idea has been so successful that the bank is now expanding its selection of firepower to include a $1,245 two-piece...

Reagan is on record that it would. Not all experts agree, but at the very least the ten-year proposal would give the Soviets more of a chance to catch up with U.S. technology. Are both sides absolutely clear on just what it was that they almost agreed to in Iceland -- specifically, would the near-deal on strategic weapons have eliminated only ballistic missiles or bombers and cruise missiles too? In either...

...summit was ill prepared, and the U.S. side did not have an opportunity + to weigh the proposals that were being offered. Both sides were contemplating in effect a nuclear-free world after a ten-year transition period. That would mean an abandonment of a deterrent that, in practical terms, has preserved the peace between the superpowers since World War II. Though the thought of eliminating nuclear war has overwhelming appeal, ill-conceived proposals may have the practical consequence of making the world less safe in the long...
