...backwoodsy George Jones, or a rock nostalgist who remembers what the back and forth between a jumping-jack-flash performer and his audience is supposed to be like. "Like great sex," he says, "where you get wild and frenzied, then turn that around quick to something gentle, tender and slow, and then get wild and crazy again and just keep doing that over and over until one of you drops dead...
...preserving (for the most part) a strict and innately aristocratic ( distance. One side of Lautrec was a goatish, little skeptic who regarded sex as a semiexcretory function -- "To make love," he once said, "it doesn't matter what you're with -- anything will do." The other side was extremely tender, and it comes out most clearly in the paintings of lesbians (a favorite literary topic in Paris in the '90s, but rarely treated in art with anything like Lautrec's sympathy...
Other former Soviet republics are already turning their backs on the ruble. Ukraine will launch a new currency called the grivna this spring; Ukraine has made coupons for the money the sole legal tender in state-owned shops. Her second, Mississippi Masala, a piquant love story about an Indian immigrant and a black American in the Deep South, is garnering warm reviews and a growing following. A film about the life of Buddha is in preproduction, and its $30 million budget...
...tender domesticity of the English Canzonettas contrasts with the broad sweep of the cantata, but Watkinson and Wilson still demonstrate their ability to exploit evocative possibilities in these short gems. The Canzonettas are fairly straightforward arrangements of strophic songs by an English poetess, accompanied by a setting of an excerpt from act II, scene 4 of Twelfth Night. Yet even if their tone is more modest than that of the cantata, their dramatic development is comparable. Haydn's delicate melody-lines are lovingly phrased by Watkinson, and Wilson audibly revels in the remarkably independent keyboard writing. The fortepiano passages contain...
