...Lawyers for Elian's Miami relatives--who refuse to send him back to his father in communist Cuba--had the boy himself sign court papers seeking U.S. asylum. Elian, they said, is capable of deciding where he wants to live. But the first-grader's crude letters betray his tender mind, like the Power Rangers in his toy box. Last week Miami Federal Judge K. Michael Moore dismissed the relatives' case and agreed with Attorney General Janet Reno that only the Cuban father, Juan Miguel Gonzalez, can speak for a child that young. "Each passing day," Moore wrote, "is another...
...impressive, no doubt, but Metheny's heart isn't there. He comes to life not in the elaborate showmanship of a piece like "(Go) Get It" but in the more contemplative tracks like "Travels" or "Just Like the Day." There are oceans of sorrow and hope in Metheny's tender musical treatment of the world. It's a shame he feels the need to lessen that tenderness by interspersing it with the technical know-how that so many other guitarists never move beyond. B --David D. Kornhaber...

That latter quality certainly shows up on this latest release, an album consisting of ballads that runs the gamut from George and Ira Gershwin to Hoagy Carmichael...
...standard "Stardust." The album would be easily dismissible were it not for Turner's flights of interpretational fancy, which soar to great melodic heights yet still maintain the melancholia inherent to many tracks. On "I Loves You Porgy," he conjures simple sentimentality in a lush landscape of tender phrasing and introspective tones. Granted, not every single aspect of Ballad Sessions works. Turner's group doesn't gel when he attempts to change pace with Latin inflections on "All or Nothing At All," and bassist Larry Grenadier and guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel just aren't up to par with their more talented...
